Per-Olov Löwdin

Lowdin

Born October 28th, 1916. Emeritus Professor of Quantum Chemistry at Uppsala University, Sweden. Graduate Research Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida, USA.

Honorary president of: the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science, Menton, France, (1986) (President 1979–85); the European Academy of Arts, Sciences and Humanities, France (1986–); the World Association of Theoretical Organic Chemists (WATOC, 1986–); the International Society of Quantum Biology; the Catalonian Quantum Chemistry Society; Doctor honoris causa (Gent 1975); Paris, (1975), Turku (1980). Uppsala University established a yearly "Per-Olov Löwdin Lectureship" in 1983. Scientific volumes (Festschrifts) have been dedicated to Dr. Löwdin in 1966, 1976 and 1989.

Dr. Löwden is the organizer of 25 Summer Institutes in Scandinavia and 15 Winter Institutes in Florida on quantum chemistry, solid-state theory, and quantum biology, and numerous international scientific conferences including 28 Sanibel Symposia.

Quantum chemistry, solid-state theory, and quantum biology. Partitioning technique, wave and reaction operators, resolvent methods, rational approximations, etc. Theory of chemical reactions, scattering states, and resonances. Foundations of quantum mechanics and quantum statistics, and their relations to classical mechanics, thermodynamics, etc. Connection between quantum theory and the special and general theories of relativity. Objectivity and reality in the modern natural sciences.
